Skyway Cats Inc is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization run by a small group of volunteers who manage several cat colonies in the Tampa Bay area.
Together, we care for the colony at the South Skyway Fishing Pier and, individually, we manage colonies in St. Petersburg, St. Pete Beach, Tampa, Tarpon Springs, Venice, and Riverview. We provide food, shelter, and medical care for over 80 cats.
We practice TNR (trap-neuter-return) in our colonies, neutering/spaying and vaccinating unsocialized cats whose home is outdoors.
We are not a rescue and are unable to take cats from the public, but we often find friendly cats and kittens in our colonies and foster them until we can get them homes, usually with the help of local rescue organizations.
Our work is critical to preventing cat overpopulation and suffering.
Kim started trapping and caring for community cats in 2018 when she became aware of a cat overpopulation problem in her St. Pete Beach community. She was connected with the small group caring for the Skyway cats in mid-2020 after she helped with a bird rescue at the South Fishing Pier and noticed a cat there. In addition to helping with the Skyway colony, she manages colonies in St. Pete Beach and St. Petersburg. Kim and her family have five rescue cats. The most recent addition is a tabby from the Skyway. Kim is a retired Verizon executive.
Maria became aware of the Skyway colony when she was fishing one day. Maria and her family recently relocated permanently to Bradenton, Florida, after the Covid-19 pandemic began and they were allowed to work from home. They have seven cats, including two very cute Skyway Cat that they trapped and decided to keep. Maria is one of our master trappers and has no fear of handling the most feral of cats.
Jana found out about the local community cat problems through Skyway Cats Inc and has enjoyed working with the group since 2021. In addition to being our secretary, she fosters cats and kittens and cat-sits when needed. She and her family have one previous shelter cat at home.
The Schroeders’ cat odyssey began with a single kitten picked up 20 years ago on their trip around the country as newlyweds in an RV. Their rescue cat count today stands at 10, including three from the Skyway Cats Colony. Carol is recently retired from a varied career and is a full-time cat mom.
The Skyway colony is healthy and happy today largely because of Gregg, who noticed a bunch of sick, hungry cats there ten years ago and built them shelters, cleaned up the colony grounds, and made sure the cats were fed regularly. He has developed a sharp eye for recognizing needy outdoor cats.
Kayla started feeding the Skyway colony in spring 2023. It didn't take long for Kayla (and her partner Craig) to jump into the deep end of the cat rescue world. One day when she was feeding the colony, she stumbled upon 10 dumped cats. In her first year of fostering, she has found homes for 24 cats.
Kayla has a background in marketing, so she has taken on planning fundraisers, managing social media, and more to support community cats! She has three of her own feline companions.
Katie is our youngest volunteer, but one of our most valuable. She is the only one who can recognize all the Skyway Cats at a glance and keeps close track of each one’s habits, characteristics, and health issues. She is a student of cat genetics and can figure out likely relationships among the cats. In addition to caring for the Skyway cats along with her mother, she helped put together this website.
Katie and her brother, Jaden, have two cats and a dog at home.
